"Alas for me! what will become of me at that dread time?" (K. III. 14-23) The "Boy" who will be "born of the dark Ocean" is Luvah in the form of Ore, born of Tharmas' waters "whom Urizen doth serve." Ore will "issue forth" in the second universe as a "dark & furious death." Urizen's misperception of his power is reinforced by a late penciled addition--"but hear my determin'd decree." In fact, the greater causality of Divine will, not the power of Tharmas' primal energies, has "determin'd" the events of futurity. Thus, Urizen acts in moral blindness, for he claims that his power determines that which is ordained. Ahania has no such illusions. Though she cannot envision Divine radiance, she asks Urizen to "leave all futurity" (K. III. 30) to the greater power of Divine will. She recounts the story of the fall to remind Urizen of the mutual interdependence of the Zoas and Emanations as aspects of "the Eternal One," or Albion, and thereby of their dependence upon Divine mercy: "0 Prince, the Eternal One hath set thee leader of his hosts, "[Raise then they radiant eyes to him, raise thy obedient hands, "And comforts shall descend from heaven into thy dark'ning clouds, del.] 30 "Leave all futurity to him. Resume thy fields of Light. "Why didst thou listen to the voice of Luvah that dread morn "To give the immortal steeds of light to his deceitful hands? "No longer now obedient to thy will, thou art compell'd "To forge the curbs of iron & brass, to build the iron mangers, |
