`find' his primal potencies, for he and Enion "are become a Victim to the Living," or have become victims to finite being.

Jerusalem, the Emanation of Albion, is hidden in "silent Contrition." A sudden awareness of guilt and sin in Tharmas causes him to build a labyrinth for Jerusalem in order to turn her into an object of worship. This labyrinth is the first of a series of buildings which, together, form a significant sequence of symbols throughout the poem. The buildings act as finite shrines before which Tharmas abases himself and calls for pity. In this labyrinth his wish is that Jerusalem lie "secret in the soft recess of darkness & silence," a reference implying that Tharmas is the cosmic womb of finitude. The regenerative energies of infinity have collapsed into Tharmas as the first step in conversion from regeneration to generation:

"The Men have reciev'd their death wounds & their Emanations

are fled

"To me for refuge & I cannot turn them out for Pity's sake."

(K. I. 33-34)

Enion's response describes her reciprocal emotional conversion from love to terror/ her vision of her fate; and her desire to be hidden:

35 Enion said: "Thy fear has made me tremble, thy terrors have

surrounded me.

"All Love is lost: Terror succeeds, & Hatred instead of Love,

"And stern demands of Right & Duty instead of Liberty.

"Once thou wast to Me the loveliest son of heaven--But now

"Why art thou Terrible? and yet I love thee in thy terror till

40 "I am almost Extinct & soon shall be a shadow in Oblivion,

"Unless some way can be found that I may look upon thee & live.

"Hide me some shadowy semblance, secret whisp'ring in my Ear,

"In secret of soft wings, in mazes of delusive beauty.

"I have look'd into the secret soul of him I lov'd,

45 "And in the Dark recesses found Sin & cannot return."

(K. I. 35-45)

The "terrors" of Tharmas surround Enion, reinforcing the inversion

of the within/without relationships of co-existence in infinity. Only the "Labyrinth" of eternal darkness remains available, thus inverting Enion's ideal regenerative role in the infinite. Surrounded by terror
